The Nokia N-Gate QD game deck has begun shipping in Europe, Africa, and Asia Pacific. The N-Gage QD is a "gaming phone", combining mobile phone connectivity and features with a device intended for mobile gaming. The QD includes an MMC slot for card-based games, as well as support for multiplayer gaming over Bluetooth or via the WAN connection using the N-Gage Arena connection. The QD also supports smartphone-style functionality, including PIM applications, an XHTML-capable web browser, and support for 3rd party Series 60 applications. it's quite good imo. I also have a 6230 and i think the sound quality is even but the N-Gage mp3 is more " stable " because sometimes my 6230 will skip if the mp3 is has been bad encoded and my N-Gage didn't have that problem. I haven't tried other phone manufacturer's phones with mp3 capability but i think it's a safe bet to say that the current mp3players on Nokia's are decent enough for listening music. Don't expect all the options like on stand-alone mp3players though, it's still a phone after all.

The sound of the mp3 player is definitely better than the FM-radio sound on 6610/7210/7250 etc.

And as i said. I don't have a stand alone mp3player to compare it too. I can give you an example : It's just like listening to music on a discman/minidiscplayer provided you use decent earbuds instead of the standard nokia ones ( that's the problem with 6230, you can only use the standard one because of the pop-port or you have to mod your headset ).

Hi,
I am planning to go for Nokia 6610/ Samsung X100, but is it possible to transfer images to phone via email.
In my country (India), Orange( HUTCH) offers email to phone service, so is it possible to send a mail and attach a pic in that, and then save that pic in the phone.

is this possible.pls let me know if any1 has tried this.

also is there any difference between the image format, polyphonic ringtone format supported by NOKIA 6610 and Samsung X100.
if i go for samsung x100, will it be possible to send images/ ringtones from my friends nokia to my samsung ??

the 6610 doesn't support Email very good, so no, it's not possible, but you can donwload images, ringingtones by wap, like a lot of users do...

Nokia 6230 full of bugs!

I was on the verge of maybe getting one of these till i read some of these expriences encountered by owners of a Nokia 6230.

It's making me doubt a lot about getting a 6230 too.. How about other manufacturors? Never heard about them encountering so many bugs in their phone-software! You'd pressume Nokia knows the S40 software inside-out already, not too different from a 6610 which has been out for 2 years now...

The 6230 is the old Series 40 software ported onto a new hardware platform with new application software bolted on. It could cause there to be a few more bugs than is usual with a Series 40 phone. Plus every software engineer at Nokia has been called into service on the next version - Series 45, although Nokia is not officially calling it that as far as I can tell - leaving few resourses availible to bug-hunt on the old Series 40.

not 100% correct, series 40 v2 is a new software version (based upon series 40) that runs only (at this moment) on the 6230 and 5140 but was develloped on the 6230...
But also never forget that this phone got the most function ever build in this type of model...

that should be right. after recent negative press, they really need to strike back with some of their new ideas, and besides most existing handsets in entry range have saturated the market at the nominal price already. Due to current 6230, 7200, 7610 releases, I would expect the higher-end releases to come later on in the year, after some new mid range announcements (which they desperately need right now).

they only presented about 4 phones up to now (for europe) and promesed about 40 new phone this year (est. around 20 new for Europe/Azia)...
but last year there were only 3 presented till June, so still no reason to panic, althow they have got some gabs in there portfolio...
It was in 2002 they presented in the first quarter a lot of new phones (about 6)
And if they present a phone this month it will be the first phone they present in May... they have never presented a phone in Januari, May and July.

in total there are 16 more to go for europe, 1 of which has been "revealed" by eldar already. the 6 planned clams haven't been shown yet at all (actually still in very heavy development as we speak, especially the technlogy side), and some VERY new ideas thrown in there by nokia some people will like. most of others are still gsm candybars, interestingly enough, many with rubbish screens still, but some top classy ones too. there's a few models in there that simply cannot fail I think. Nokia will be going after previous 8310 and 6310i type owners, many of which were dissapointed with current "replacements" (7250i and 6820). Their strategy is quite good - on one hand they will be updating these GSMs, on the other hand they're releasing some totally new funkey clams with interesting design. Eldar stated that they are trying to be different to Samsung - I disagree, I think they're trying to set new trends of their own regardless of other companies. Later in year people will either

1) go for samsung's now established, upgraded flips
or
2) go for old style updated nokia candybars
or
3) go for the fresh new style nokias (clams, ringtouchers)

as sad as it may be, flooding the market with LOTS of handsets has worked for nokia in the past
should be interesting to see what happens. my bets are still with nokia, with SE possibly taking over in the high end due to better pricing.

for instance 7600 is fashion but not popular
7200 is interesting as design study, but weak as a real product etc...

the same situation around new models, they are very interesting in terms of design, in some kind first on the market, but people prefer not to be pioneer and try all things, they are prefer to buy solid phones, with good features...

BTW, replacement of 8910i will be good. Replacement for 6820 isnt good...

do you think so? 7200 and 6230 are very high margin products, and selling well enough for nokia i would imagine. but yeah possibly nokia may be getting too ahead of themselves trying to set trends that could basically flop. they overspent on r&d with 7210+7250i etc, and are now cutting back a bit, which was sensible, but still a bit weird with some handsets. that last proto i came across which seemed to look like 6820 successor looked nicer, but i noticed the screen was quite bad, is that even a TFT? 8910i successor is indeed stunning. I did not look at the papers but it appears they're going back to magnesium alloy, the shaping and feel is pure 8850/8910 class, if not better. I still think a few key handsets in 3xxx, 6xxx and 8xxx range will keep nokia number 1 - the UI is back to snappy fast old style nokia, not the sluggish overdone 7210 etc they had on market last year, which has put them in a dangerous position considering SE and samsung have been coming up with unexpected challenges. There's still some things about nokia - UI, RF, auto volume, decent loudspeaker, speed, antennas etc that make a nokia feel right I think, that competitors still need to work on.

you will be suprised i think by some products from Siemens and Moto later this year... they are on way for build good autonomy, RF, UI (these is for moto only, next sw version from October)
i couldnt agree that 7200 is a good selling, it has a pretty good sales but not overwhelming at all... for instance e700 has a bigger sales or even z600 is better on market....

6230 is a bestseller, definitely, and margin is a very high (around 200 Euro per handset). Multiply it on 12 mln of 6230 and you count Nokia profit

I repeat that users now buying familiar brend, design, set of features... they arent like a design studies. About brand awarness, loyality nokia has some problems now (too many 3310 was sold on market in last two years). They are strongly need to move from low end models to middle class, Nokia 3200 was a first step in this direction, later it will be around 5-6 product in this segment. It is good but pepole really need only 1-2 handset, not 10-12 from one vendor (spenduture on R&D, design develop, support etc higher for Nokia).
In any case this year for Nokia is most important.. they loose market or stay a top...

The 7600 and the 7200 might be a flop in term of sale figure, but still it's good a company (like nokia) try's to bring them on the marked just as show off, ...
but indeed phone just based upon design are not good comercialy (look at the Siemens Xelibri department)... but still those are the one who giving us a idea of what's possible or not...
And Nokia can afford a flop.

im interested to as which ones eldar has got his hands on. the 3g clams are still very internal and in development as we speak, even design wise, possibly it's the premium edge models + the couple of funny designer ones that have been complete for some time now. if he shows the 6260 already nokia might be mad at him for stopping some sales the others definiately need to be out now though, because competition is taking over quite dangerously. Nokia are being silly if they think they can keep 7200 and 6230 as flagships for much longer than a few months from now.

i am amazed samsung refused actually - it gives samsung more profit (from more lcds) and an advantage with margins on phones. even legally, would this be allowed? there are quite a few other lcd makers besides, but yeah, you're right, nokia is a european company and they are finding it tough to source from far away lands in huge quantities. From what i know, arrangements for production of the 128x128 gsms was done quite early on, when they were prototyping 7200 etc, they should be ok there, but with the larger displays, they have to look to sharp, samsung etc, and that is going to get tricky...they are the world's largest manuf. however, they will always find a source in huge taiwanese market for lcds (which is growing fast), but as you say, quality consistency is going to become a big issue. they did this a bit with the mono LCDs, but with colour LCDs i would imagine this problem is much more noticeable. Also remember UFB etc are also strong options here, and there are plenty of makers for that tech, and these can be pushed into lower end handsets without much worry, with some good aspects of LCD but less power drain.

U can go www.mobile-review.com and see the n3200 review. If u wanna buy a phone for imaging,I suggest u go for other brand like motorola,panasonic of even SE. Nokia camera is not so good,even n6600.

Why the hell can't my N6100 do this??!!

Hi there!
Today i got bored of my vibrate,and tried to change it, but guess what?! IT cant do it! Now, mine is a version 5 and i have checked with version 4 phones, and this can be done. I simply put the ring to none and change the ringtone, so the vibrate plays along with the song. This cant be done with the version 5. If i apply the beep once, the vibrate will be a slower type. Can anyone help me fix this???

I am not so clear about wat are u trying to mean. But i know there are some songs that will make ur phone (i test on my 6610) vibrates by following the tones of the songs,but some songs doesn't,i dunno how to make a songs that can make ur vibrates in certain way.If that song doesn't have a it,the phone will vibrate in normal, means no slow and fast vibrating.

Ok, let me be more clear this time. For N6100 users, you have to access the profiles first. Next is the desired profile, mine is silent. From there click personalise. Now click on ringing tone. ( For testing perposes, the incoming call alert should be on ringing.) Go to any desired one, and demo it. Notice that with each tone, the vibrate goes along with the tone. Now, i would like to do the same while there is no sound. That means i want different types of vibrates with no melodies to follow. Can this be done?

Ok.
I have discovered a trick to make ur phone vibrates in different ways(silent but not in slient mode)
First, u will need a ringtone file that can make ur phone vibrates in a different way. (e.g. all nokia pre-installed poly ringtone files)
Second, use a sw called MobiMB to copy the MIDI files from ur phone to ur pc.
then, use nokia sound converter to modify that MIDI file.
if your phone supports only 4-chords MIDI, put all channels value higher that 4 so that your phone cant play the channels thus no sounds will be made, however, your phone will sitll vibrate.
Finally, upload this file into ur phone and choose it as ur ringtones,
u dun have to switch to silent mode bcoz the ringtones will not make any sounds but only vibrations. if u switch to silent mode, the ringtones will not be played and ur phone will vibrate in the old ways.

hope this helps madaboutlifting although it has been a very long time ago.

there are both very good, but still the 6230 is way much better then the 5140,
a little comparison;
in basic the size is almost the same, the 5140 is only 3 mm larger, but thiner... The screen make a bigger difference, the 5140 has got a 4K, 6230 a 65K screen (same size), both phone are triband and support EDGE...
the real differences are that the 6230 got a music player, bluetooth, MMC card, animated screensavers,...
the 5140 got features like digital compas, thermometer, Flashlight and Decibel meter, got Stereo FM radio and offcourse the splash and dustprotection shells...
it's just depends on you what features you wanna have...

But this is not all, there are about 2 version and those are not compatible at this moment, you've got the version of Samsung and Nokia, like on the 5140, and you got the version of SE, Siemens, and Motorola,... and those are not compatible... a shame, really a shame... and why, it's just a matter of money!!!

I have nokia 6610.
I know ur prob.
U cant send pic files from n3660 to n6100 bcoz n6100 is runing on Series 40 while n3660 is runing on Series60 (Symbian operating system in handphone).
Only Series 60++ allows u to send a pic files via IrDa.
So u cant send pic files from n3660 to n6100.
However,u can try send it via MMS, or send to pic to a PC then send it back to n6100.

it's not because it's a series40 or series60 phone. The fact is that Nokia " tuned down " the IR on older series40 phones. That means that things like sending and receiving pictures and ringing tones are disabled. I can send a pic or ringtone from my 6230 to a friend's 6220 ( both are " newer versions " of Series40 ) but i can't send it to my gf's 6100. Sending and receiving things to/from series60 isn't a problem, that just works.

I' agree with Dcell. It's not because one is series 60 and the other's a S40. I' have a N3650 and my son has a SE-T300 (and it's not even symbian), and We can transfer pic's via Ir all day if we want. Must be some thing else wrong with your phone?

if you want it directly it's not possible unless you use MMS. Indirectly u can use some pc programs like Nokia PC suite to transfer files from your 6100 to pc and then transfer it via the pc to a series60 phone.

I thought 6220 can also send by IR ( not 100 % sure ). It can receive anyway as i tried with a friend. And 7250i can transfer files by IR too if i am correct ( also not 100% sure :P ) The other Series40 phone can't transfer files by IR ( with exception of 6230 )

its huge, implements older pilot 3g tech, and was generally created to satisfy operators that nokia can deliver wcdma handsets (as was 7600, in some ways). it is not a proper complete 3g release of the likes you will see later this year from Nokia. if you are a collector then maybe it is worthwhile.

there are some things i like about the 6650, the camera lens protector system, the buttoms look nice and a big screen.. it has got something from the 6310, looks very bussiness... althow it's very big, has got an antenna and it's a mobile that being used by a lot of operators to test the first 3G networks, got some historical value, indeed like gaurav said, if you are a collector

because you need more processor power to emulate a gba. Nes and gbc aren't emulated 100% correct yet ( sound is awful ) so gba would be even more harder to emulate.

even if the N-gage hardware owns the GBA hardware it doesn't mean that it can emulate a gba 100%. GBA games are programmed with GBA in mind, so the programcode of the games are written with GBA hardware in mind. To emulate it is very difficult as the N-Gage hardware is not miles ahead of a GBA. Maybe it's possible to program a GBA emu, i am not sure. But i think it's very difficult to program such a application as far as i know.

the N-gage is not that much more powerful than the GBA realistically(or even not as powerful) therefore it cannot possible emulate it because a GBA runs games with its hardware, while an emulation on the N-gage will require a lot of proccessing power as it runs the game in using software to emulate the hardware.

I have the symbian application to make the screen blank in white and function as a torch...it is called Torch.sis

I am thinking of goin for a new nokia 6610.but i have come to know that it has only 725Kb of shared memory, wherin they store phonebook entries, pics, ringtones, mms messages etc etc.
so is that much of memory enough.
how much of each (example) mms, sms, phonebook entries, ringtones, pics, can we store in a nokia 6610??
is there some better option for nokia 6610 within the same price range.

otherwise my 2nd option is Samsung X 100, but overall Nokia brandname is more famous than Samsung. so will it be good if i go for samsung x100.

6230 questions from a newbie.

Hi I just bought a 6230 and have some questions which I hope you guys can help me with.
I’m thinking about buying a big MMC card and heave read here that it works fine, but is it possible to make different play lists? I have just been able to make one with all the songs? I would like to have several playlists if I have a big MMC card, is that possible?

Is there any way to set the time the display is lit up? I think it gets dark to fast. And whne it’s dark it’s hard to see anything really.

Another question is if it is possible to do any changes to the cloack that starts after a while. It’s so dark that it’s hard to see what time it is. The font should be balder or white. Is there any way to change this, perhaps get a new clock?

SOrry had one more question. I have been transfering files thrue IR to the phone. I used the Audio Mnger to transfer mp3's but I can't see the MMC card so I can only transfer to the phone memory thne I have to move the file from the phone before I can transfer another one. What am I doing wrong? Why can't I transfer directly to the MMC card?

In order to use the MMC probably you have to rename it or else you won't be abel to use it. Go to Gallary - Select the No-name MMC and choose rename/reformat.

Your question about the time-to-darkness I know that somewhere you can change this from 15 sec to 30 sec. But can't remember where. So keep looking.

8300 is not a final decision yet, but if they do that will be the unique-style 3g cam and pretty much their headliner for this new generation. The 6300 I played with should really be same thing but bigger and aimed more at modern business clients, also cheaper. I can certainly think of another 8 series - the one hinted at as 8220/8100 - that model retains aspects of 6230 in new premium line generation. Also there are some models using more than 163x132 as well obviously. 7750 may not be shown yet. some of the phones are still under very deep development, including lots of the new 3-series generation (3-4 3xxx phones), I would be surprised if eldar has got details on every single one. Lets wait and see

also, about 5 clams, not 2-3 (nokia has gone all-out with clams now, so although initially 2 were planned, timing and operator pressure resulted in them dropping some experimental candybars and going with more clams with 2 cameras on them). the innovations this time round are huge with regards to menus and button ideology.

63xx will sell good still i am sure in same way 6310i did when 8310 was out, & 7200 is not doing bad despite the size and internal features too. I suppose because there are so many new ones, they have to leave some things out of some handsets to make the more expensive ones more attractive, there's so many, they only need to sell a few each of these new ones . Nokia have to retain their identity with some things rather than move with the rest of the manufacturers I suppose. Putting qvga screens on all the phones would lead them to direct competition with samsung/sharp and they simply cannot win in that area really.

a lot of them will just use same s40 menus with refined icons/shape etc, for most of the gsm-edge phones do not expect anything majorly different from what we already have with 7200 and 6230. expect major design innovation/trend setting though (especially external design, buttons), which has always been nokias strong point with phones like the 6/8 series on gsm. the 3g clams will use somethings you have not seen before at all however. I am not sure if eldar will be able reveal anything about those menus in next few days. when he releases pictures of the clams, i think it's important to bear in mind that these are quite heavy phones. they had a very high level magnesium/alum clam phone proto at recent meeting, 8950 I would suspect, but i would amazed if they introduced that this year, too many bugs/very heavy.

i.e. expect very top end phones in 3g (dualcam clams in key markets) AND gsm premium ones like you have seen before.

Interesting that no one is commenting on any of the Bluetooth accessories that Nokia is planing as many of the new phones will make use of accessories to extend the usability. The new platform that Nokia is using in the handsets with the touchwheel will make heavy use of accessories.

it's probably important to emphasize that most of the new nokias won't be too impressive (most low-mid ones still use cheap small screens), but are going to set new limits for what cheap handsets can do. A heavy emphasis will be on expensive accessories to tempt phone buyers afterwards, much in vein of their xpress-on idea (which was a BIG hit), and nokia expect the accessories to become very mainstream and generate a seperate strong stream of revenue. They hinted at this earlier with radio stand and bluetooth add-ons for 7250i etc, earlier, but reception was soft then. This time they are putting more emphasis on the core features of these accessories (similar situation to ngage-> ngage qd). If this takes off Nokia will be in BIG money all over again Only handset I have seen that will give the new nokia 8xxx sets a challenge is the Sony F. Samsungs to come later this year generally are re-hashes of last years releases (with bigger camera, mp3 etc), and I doubt that will let them gain any further market share.

also on the small gsm 8xxx models - specification wise, do NOT expect a K700 beater. that simply cannot be done due to supply issues with screens of that type (a rumour going around lately) and simply because there is little else you can pack into the size of a handset to compete with K700.

a few years back with 8310 vs T68i, nokia has a more trendy, much higher selling handset. for every t68i, nokia sold 10 8310s. even technically, t68i was very slow and poorly designed (non sony design lead). Nokia are obviously trying something similar here later this year again. The thing is, this time Ericsson has Sony with them. K700 destroys all weaknesses of t68i (fast menus, fantastic design) while capturing a lot of what made 8310 so successful. Basically, Nokia are going to have it harder this year, and should NOT act like they have the market to themselves and be wasting too much time on accessorizing their product range which may not even sell well in the first place. They'll need a hell of a handset to battle F700 afterwards also. They simply will not be able to charge $1000 again - no one will buy it. Nokia's turning into a Nintendo, and it's best they realise that soon. If SE or Moto takes leadership over time in europe, then it won't take long for Nokia to fall to 2nd. I am not sure about international handlings, I think Samsung is making major steps towards customers there too.

I think new Nokias are great, but marketing wise they need to step down a bit and concentrate on selling decent handsets at decent prices with a NEW attitude to stay on top this time.

I can see it now.. the new nokia gsm 8xxx will have a great sale, nokia are excellent with their seires 8.
Also these days I can see many young people going after features (mainly bluetooth, wav tones, big screens) ... most of my friends bought the 6600 which was aimed for bussness men. so my guess is any new series 60 will be a great sale too as these tend to have most features.

The most important thing i'm looking forward to in eldars review is the new commi, 8xxx and the new nokia desgns which always suprises us :P

A few things about the N6100 that i would like to check....

HI guys!
I have had the N6100 for almost a week now and i do have a few questions about it.

1) Talk key
When in standby mode, if pressed, it only shows the calls you made. Can
you set it to the calls you made AND received?

2) 4-way scroll key
Currently the top and bottom direction is for number search. Can i change
their functions?

3) Lets say i often use a perticualar function, like the calculator, can i set
the phone somehow so that I can access it very easily, without going
through all the menu's?

Nokia 7610 screen comparable to gx20?

Hi all,

I currently have the Nokia 3650. The screen is good, but recently I saw a friends sharp gx20, and I was really impressed with the screen! It was sharp and crisp, made my 3650's screen look really bad!

I am planning to get the Nokia 7610 when it is released, and was wondering if anyone knew if the screen would be as clear as maybe the gx20's? Maybe Nokia & Sharp use different screen types, i'm not sure - just any help/advice would be appreciated

it will make more difference in pictures and foto's video's, but when writing sms or doing wap you wont feel the extra colors... even in the menu's you won't see a difference, will be brighter althow...

in tools you find settings, then go to phone settings and then go to phone language...
no the problem is that it's chinese so you'll have to do it by guessing;
the icon of settings is a screwdiver and a wheel, click on this; then go to second line/option and click it and then click the first option, these are normaly the language settings...

does not have english menus. The phone can read and display english
but the menus can't be changed to english

but that officially Nokia Service Centres are not allowed to change the
language pack even if they were nice enough to change it for you like
they were to me you would have to pay for it since the phones warrenty
is not valid outside the region in which it was sold.

i was charged 25euro for the firmware upgrade, depending where you are
i suggest you get an independant service centre to do the firmware
upgrade like gsmphonesource.com

Questions for N6100 users.....

Guys,
I think this is a really good phone, because i just got it! Anyway, about the organizer, i have only the two given programs, the calender and the to do list. On gsmarena, it is stated that i can measure the temperature, but i don't have the feature on my phone? Why is that?
Now, the to do list is limited, so is there any other way of saving notes?? ( e.g shopping lists) With java, are there any really good programs i can download to increase the productivity of the organiser and the phone as a whole?

No temperature measurement on this phone, the 5100, 5140, 5210 can do, not the 6100. Probably a fould of gsmarena...
you have some java programs where you can keep a list of to do things, but i think the feature on phone is still better and faster (java isn't the fastest thing to load)... just use all letters available to write a note...

Accept the white/gold and black/red ones from the official site.

I've seen some pics of the phone, and some of them don't have the red line on the riight of the phone (black cover) but they have a silver line.

Does this depend on the country or will they only make one without the red line ?

Pictures' quality should be _much_ better now, compares to this rather old prototype and firmware (I believe there is a mistake in the date, it must be something like 19-02-04).
I heard about at least 2 major hardware changes and there must have been many improvements in software too (since february).

Well, in term of 7610 picture quality, I do agree that it should be better than those but I don't think it's gonna be improved before the releasing date. There might be a firmware upgrade afterward. However, the photo quality have to be improved a lot more for competing with Sharp GX30/1/2 series.

Picture quality has improved quite noticably already (before release date)

Sharp is not really a comparable phone since 7610 is a Symbian-based smartphone, though its (Sharp) camera is the best still

And finally ... keep dreaming about stereo If it does not have one now, it's got to be a miracle to add it in a few weeks.

What differences are there between polyphonic ringtones? Older Nokia's are 16 chords, and I heard 6230 is 24 chords, but some newest are 40, right? Is there much difference? And what exactly are MIDI tones and TRUE tones?

Why Nokia introduces 3G handsets with no support for video-calling service?

Samsung, Motorola, LG, SE, Sagem, Nec, etc. have all introduced UMTS handsets with a dual camera system and rotating camera system. However, Nokia still continues to use single camera located on the backside of the phones. Thus, it is impossible for users to make a video-call...

As far I know most of European operators will launch soon 3G services by massively promoting video-calling service to increase ARPU (Average Revenue Per Unit). What is the position of Nokia on this fact?

Nokia lost 20% of its market share in UK last year, when first wave of camera phones were launched. Vodafone decided to import massively some special handsets like Sharp GX10 and Panasonic GD87 for their own use -and not to chose Nokia as top supplier. I think such a strategy can begin again this year for the launch of 3G accross Europe.

Don't forget Nokia is like all other manufacturers -nothing more-. If they can't provide competitive UMTS products quickly, then operators will chose other suppliers... Operators will not wait after Nokia because they have to start commercial phase of UMTS as soon as possible. They invested lot of money in UMTS and expect the best ROI as possible. The deal is to sell a maximum of 3G handsets and they don't care if it is a Motorola, a Nec or a Nokia product. Business is business

However, I want to be optimistic about Nokia and I want to think they will be more reactive than Asian manufacturers. Cross my fingers.

Early video-call functionality on UMTS has been pre-standard and circuit-based 56Kbps crap. Nokia's internal market testing is telling them that the application will not take off until a)the packet standard is implemented offering better performance and b)40-50% of the 3G users can do it. 3 has NO traction on this application at all. Nokia has dual camera 3G phones that they are planning to introduce around the end of the year on the packet standard.

how many country's or providers allready have 3G? not a lot, it's not yet the time to put them on the marked when there is no use to it.

I think the succes of videocalling is the pricetag of it, how much will it cost more to call someone with video? hopely not very mych because i'm not going to pay double price for something like that. Don't wanna see my mother when she's calling me... lol

Sadly not, I very much doubt that anyone of them will be S80, as they normally (well have done in the past) have there own Pc Suite.

I would assume that there are an even spread of s40 & s60 devices.

Nokia are trying to fully intergrate there s40 & s60 Pc Suites, so the scope of support doesn't have to span such a wide range of software suites.

Cheecko, when the phone is in under development, mean when a co decides on a new phone (laying down the blue print and stuff) they dont give then codes like 6600,7610 ets right a way...they give them code names like these. matrix,king...w/e etc. for keeping it a secret, officials within the co refer to them (phones) with their names.

Officialy the Nokia 6600 under development was Calimero... The King is just a name given by phoneshops, but has got nothing to do with the names Nokia give to there phones...

Nokia uses codenames to phone when they are in devellopment for several reasons:
- to make it more secret (if a phone calles 6240 for example, and it leaks out, everybody know there is going to be a successor for the 6230; but if they call it 'Niobe' nobody know what type of phone it will be)
- When a phone is under devellopment, nobody really know how the model will be numbered (7600, 7710, ...), this is a pure commercial naming, being done just before launch... You see in rumors that the names changes. It's not even sure the 7710 will be called the 7710 on launch...

I really doubt it has anything to do with secrecy. Moreover what is successor or predeccessor of what can be only decided after sales start - phones are not coming out in order of their model number.

I think you are trying to find a meaning where there is none. Every project or task in any industry have a codename just to address it somehow. Actual commercial outcome usually has very little to do with original project. Project may have whatever name - just disctintive enough, while commercial product must follow some marketing rules in order to be successful on the market. Thet is why the same brand could have a different name for a different market (I bet everybody knows the story of Chevrolet Nova when it'd hit spanish-speaking market)

What number will this phone get? looks like being a 6640 or something. But in the announcement it says: "For business users the company has prepared other smartphone with similar functions, but in different shell. Read about it on our site very soon." But this "Charlie" looks to be the business-version! what is this then??? Certainly no 3XXX or 76XX!!

I would say it will have it for sure. That's because WCDMA isn't covering any wide area yet and GSM is needed even in mid town area also to cover holes in WCDMA. And I think this will remain the same for maybe two coming years.

I made some measurements in these photos and if we think the screen remains the same as 6600 then this phone is 110,6x59,2mm in dimensions. Thickness is about 22,6 and in lens area it is about 25,5 mm.

So this will be somehow similar to 6600 in its size. And that is really good considering it has WCDMA! (6600: 108.6 x 58.2 x 23.7mm)

the design close to the 36x0 in general but it seems similar to the K700 specially upper semi of the phone.
lower semi looks like old nokia phones.
and the design of keypad so much better than 7610. (like 6600)

Yes this is only a visual effect, the further seems to be smaller than the closer. And this is due to used distance between phone and camera which is pretty small. (Like when you take photo of someones head and you take it with wide-angle lens and small distance between the head and camera you then got really big nose and small ears.)

About the N-Gage:
I bought one because it was really cheap. I payed ~ 150 USD for it. I thought that it came with 3 games, but mine got only one, but who cares when I got a 128 MB MMC card.

Games:
I have never used a mobile phone with such superior gaming experience as N-Gage. There is no phone that can beat or are close to the gaming experience on this one.
There are now 20 N-Gage games out there, and I've spent many hours playing The Sims - Bustin out and Splinter Cell for now.
If you get bored of the N-Gage games, there is always an opportunity to install Symbian games and play them, or JAVA-games. Personally I prefer the pure N-Gage games.
Luckily Nokia annouced more titles for the N-Gage. Don't recall how many titles.

MP3/Radio:
The sound quality is excellent. You can use either the headphones (that were included), the speaker, or use the 2.5 mm -> 3.5 mm and attach your own quality headsett with it.
One nice option is that you can write sms while listening to mp3s.
Radio is also good, I don't use this function as much as the above mentioned.

Talking:
Here is a problem; either you look like a dumbass talking to a big taco or you can use the HF or speaker. I choose to use the HF.

SMS:
You have to write sms with to hands, one holding the phone and the other punshing the keys.

Battery:
If you are a gamer (nerd whatever) you have to charge the battery every day. I play games and listen to mp3 a lot so I have two BL-5C batteries.
I don't know how much the battery will last if I don't play or listen to mp3s.
That could be an experiment, but why bother.

I think free N-Gage games are not available anymore...or very difficult to find one...cos Nokia is treating this pirated behavior very seriously...Nokia is still seeking those sites providing free N-Gage games download and banned the site from doing that...

anyway...besides N-gage games...there are many more symbian games...try www.gtwar.com , hundreds of sis games and jar games for symbian...

I own a 6600...it is now much like a game deck for me...and mp3 player too...quality is acceptable for me...but I am still considering to buy an N-Gage...hehehe

for me n-gage is :

gaming : n-gage games are far better then any sis , jar games!. specially the new ones like fifa 2004 , sims . they r just gr8! .

mp3: the mp3 output is very clear on the speaker as well as the handsfree. both loud and clear and the same goes for the radio .

talking : the side talking is very weird like a big thing sticking out of ur ear :P

no pop port means there is no way u can attach a camera to it .

battery lifr is really short .

as for the games , the games for n-gage are more like zip files in which u have system files and libs . both these go into ur memory card but card reader .

another way is to get the blz files . for this , u will first have to send the blz installer to ur phone by blue tooth , then the games to the open dir. of the memory card. and unzip it on ur phone .

Playlist solution 6230

here is a solution for the playlist thing some people had some troubles with;

now you can have your different music types or singers songs in different folders in the mmc!!!

what you have to do step by step is here:

1- create one or several folders anywhere in the mmc memory, for ex: "rock" , "jazz" and "rap"

2- after that, simply slip your songs into each folder

2- than, on nokia audio manager press "edit" than "create a playlist" , name and save your playlists one by one (jazz, rock and rap). once all the playlists named and saved you'll have to select "the mmc memory" file and slip them into there.

*note that the playlists will be invisible once you slip them

3- finally, on the bottom you'll see a folder called "playlist" enter into it(the operation may take a while), then select for ex "jazz" , right click and select "add" than you'll see a list with all the songs in the memory of the mmc(doesnt matter where they are), simply select your songs for each playlist and here is how to have different playlists that you can store the songs in different folders.

-to erase and add songs afterwards:

you cannot directly erase the songs from playlist option, you'll have to open each folder with "nokia audio manager" and erase the songs you want.
and to add its exactly the same way as i wrote it before, put new songs into their folder in the mmc, than add the new ones on the playlists and listen to them...

first make that the bluetooth doggle on pc is on, after that open your bluetooth on your phone. both will see each other and say if they are connected, sometimes you need to fill in a code... on your phone you can see which other bluetooth capable devices are in the neighberhood in the menu under bluetooth (paired devices and active device)...open pc suite or other programs to connect

-A sms counter; it keeps track on how many text messages you have send.
-Does it have the function for a delivery report? So you get an sms back where it says: sms delivered etc?

I don't think the 6220 has got a sms counter, couldn't find it anyway... but the 6230 has got this feature...
but for the delivery report no problem. most Nokia's support delivery reports...

Well, to read "Connecting people" you'd probably need some radiop experience, but I thought everybody can read "sms"... simply because it is so darn close to "SOS" which is ...---... and should have been well known even to a non-trained ear.

Actually I did not like initially that tone - I am very much against distress signals usage in ads, FM-radio stations or anywhere else since it compromises the idea of a distress signal

EDGE and GPRS

i was reading the FAQ on the nokia site and it said tht if the phone doesnt find EDGE , then it would SWITCH its self to GPRS automatically. then y is it tht these phones cant connect to gprs and mms on my network??

You can set-up edge and gprs or just one of both, if your network doesn't support edge, just set-up grps settings and the phone won't try to switch to edge. so you use GPRS the hole time...
if this is what you wanna know, don't really understand question.

You don't have to have different settings for EDGE, just normal GPRS settings from your operator. If your operator happens to support EDGE and it's available, phone will automatically use it. It's totally invisible to user. The only thing user might notice is the increased data speed.

That's why it doesn't work. 7250 uses still WAP protocols to create GPRS connection. 6230 uses TCP/IP and because of this the settings are a bit different. In 6230 you also need to define proxyserver and -port. You'll get these from your service provider.

I want to use it as a mp3player but I never heard mp3's in mono, is it really that worse?? (nokia 6600 does NOT have stereo-output)

So I think I should take the 6230 but the 6600 is operating on Symbian with lots more functions...

Are there people that can tell me about the 6600's mp3player and ringingtones (read in the review that there are not that hard) also I would like to know about the different applications that you use...i know there are lots and lots of appz but do you really use it??

What I would like to know about the 6230 is of the screen is really that bad...?

About the 6600:

The mp3 songs plays not that bad but plays like what the .WAV files, it plays at 16kHz so you won't expect very good quality songs. But it's unlike any previous series 60 phones, the 6600 ringtones are loud, very loud enough to hear it (that's my opinion). A good application for playing MP3 music is MP3Player, and for getting the ringtones even louder you could an app such as Ringtone Studio. The applications are usefull depends on what you realy need.

About the 6230:

It's the latest best series 40 Nokia phone you'll see, It has the stereo ouput and plays the MP3 songs very clearly (a good mp3 player) specially that it comes with a 32MB MMC card, you can add 256MB MMC cards too. The screen is perfect in my opinion it supports up to 65k colors just like the 6600.

so if your looking for an mp3 player phone with other feature packed, you should be looking for the 6230. The 6600 also feature packed plus it's a symbian phone you could add apps and good programs, but you won't like the mp3 sound quality on it because the phone doesn't support stereo.

the others don't have good mp3 quality

the 6230 uses also a hardware mp3 decoder and it's a pretty sound comming out of such a small device.

so if you want it for mp3, go for the 6230, do you wanna have more options and more application that can do more, go for the 6600

YES there will be ALOT of differnces in terms of sound. the MP3 sound in the 6600 is not gonna be that clear it will be like your hearing a simple .WAV file. While in the 6230 the sound is so so clear and a perfect quality sound.

6230 : the best speaker phone any nokia phone had uptill now . the mp3 sounds realli sweet when u play it from its own speaker . while the headset isnt all tht loud . i guess the handsfree nokia is using isnt all tht gr8.

6600 :u can have mp3 player for this phone but trust me , its just like having a mp3 player, and getting happy tht u have it , but never listening to it . the quality realli is bad speaially when u listen it tru the speaker . its realli low , distroted .

p900 : it has the best mp3 player . well when u listen to it tru. the mp3 player , the volume is low . but when u put it on the ringtone , its realli loud and good .

sx1 : the phone is bad in every way . stay away from it plz!! unstable software, difficult keypad , bad mp3 and the speaker is allmost same as 6600 .

i think the best for u is 6230 if for mp3 . but the handsfree 7200 is using , is the best i have seen . its really loud and nice . i hope this helps

The first version where very unstable indeed, but the firmware is already upgraded for 3 times and I heard that it is stable now (heard from people who have the phone).

As I'm going to buy it I will of course first take a look at it in a shop and test the mp3/radio and stuff

I would go for a Nokia 6600. The phone has better screen, camera(?), and way better software-speed. It has a newer version of SymbianOS (7.0), SX1 has (6.1). But if you really need mp3 in stereo and radio in your mobile, then go for a SX1.
And the keypad is very good on N6600.

the annoying thing about the 6230..when playing MP3's is that most of the name is cut off on the screen(cos its small). If you have a large MMC with a lot of music it becomes more of a probelm. If u want to find a particular song most of the time u cant tell which is which because of the "cutting off". therefore you have to listen to the start of most of the songs....i suppose you could get used to it but i find it really annoying.
I would definately recommend the N6600.

They're both great phones,
but in the end it really depends on what you need from a phone, if you really need mp3 and expandable memory then get the 6230, otherwise get the k700, it fixes most of the previous problems of SE phones and the UI and screen are excellent

se k700 will have 1.3 megapixel camera so if you really want a good camera its better than 6230.

on the other hand if you care about music and think that a vga camera is sufficient then definitely 6230. 6230 has an mmc slot and a stereo mp3 player, which se k700 will not have, plus it's already out in the market.

Sony Ericsson NL had an article yesterday saying it would be 489 Euros, but I doubt it will be the same everywhere around the world.

As for the choice between the two, the phones are very similar when it comes to features, the K700 has nicer themes, a large,r vivid hiresolution screen, higher bit polyphonic ringtones but no possibility for memory expansion.

The 6230 does support memory cards, but has a small, lo resolution screen and is also slightly bigger and heavier.

I've used the T610 and T68i and I got to tell you, the RF performance has NEVER bothered me.... even with 1 bar in the red, it still makes VERY good calls.... while i remembered once we were suppose to call a friend, my friend tried calling on her nokia with 4 bar.. can't get through... and mine with 1 can.... =D

They are both good phones but if you really want to use it as a MP3 player, then Nokia 6230 is your choice but remember this, the battery will be used up pretty fast.
It is not like a real small MP3 which last for 35 hours or something like that. Sony Ericsson K700 is like a Nokia 6230 but it does things better except from lack of expandable memory.

About SE phones RF performance
Try to read the professional measurements made in a 2 million euro laboratory by german mobile phones magazine CONNECT(probably available in other languages/countries too). You'll see that SE phones have/had a RF problem.
So please dont tell me stories, Im a SE P900 fan too (I own it), but Im realistic.

The 6230 does not compare to the K700 even with expansion slot. Stupid design and bad screen (small!) as evidenced mby reviews. The K700 holds its own and realize that this phone is not being toted as a full fledged MP3 device (reason for no expansion maybe). If you're comparing anything to K700, better off trying E398 from Motorola even though it still doesn't beat K700!!!

I have had the oppurtunity to play with the 7700 and its not that bad (shame about the sidetalking tho). The screen and speed are very good. And its symbian interface is eloquent but like all the other series's it pretends to be a computer in terms of its sructure.

Its was a pre-production model so a lot of the software was not working but if anybody has any general quetions fire away.

All the points made above are true, although we can't tell you which phone is right for you. We can only make recommendations. And as well as all of the above, the 7600 is a 3G mobile, but doesn't support Video Conferencing. A bit strange but there you go. So as long as you don't mind that the 7600 has a bigger screen, I'd go for the 6230.

2. 7600 is a wcdma phone so if you call in a wcdma network, more power is needed to make a phone call. but better voice quality. for gsm usage the 7600 can go for 4h call, the 6230 can go up to 5h call...
but the 7600 is better with standby
3. the 7600 got a bigger screen 128*160 vs the 6230 128*128, both are 65K. so the screen of the 7600 will be better.
4. they uses the same mms system so no differences, only you got a bigger screen, so more details can be shown...
5. the mp3 system of the 6230 is ingenius, so the 6230 got a better sound system then the 7600.

It is quite stupid that Nokia did not make a series 60 on the
outside so that there will be programs on the market which
can be used when the 9500 is opened and when it is closed,
for instance Wayfinder or other navigator programs.

Now you must have a very special carkit which has the
option of holding the 9500 opened, then you can see
the map and direction of the navigator software.
Now there is only a carkitholder which holds the 9500
closed and that is not very handy when you are
navigating in a car. Series 60 would have solved such

Drop my bluetooth device on the floor...

Just bought my first bluetooth device few days ago...the brand is Micronet...not sure how's the quality...but really surprise for its small size...just a little piece of circuit board with an IC plug on it and cover with plastics...

Anyway...I drop my bluetooth on the floor for a few times...this always happened when I try to plug in and plug out the device from my pc...

Although it is still functioning well now...but just a question...will this causes damage on the device by dropping it on the floor too oftenly?...(not veru high distance...from the top of my pc to the ground...about 1 meter high)

that is a feature depending on your SIM card, with some it's not possible.
Newer SIMs have a feature called 'clock stopping' that allows the phone to save energy -- it is a kind of sleep mode for SIM cards. Not all versions of software support this.
You cannot turn the SIM clock on and off, the phone will do it automatically if the SIM supports clock stopping.

I use with satisfaction a Nokia 3200 that I synchronise with my outlook.
It's very disappointing to notice that only one address and one email address are synchronised.
Each field (Note, Email, and Address) can contain only 60 characters. So if a postal address (in Outlook) is longer than 60 characters, it won't be completely imported into the phone.
Is it the same with all Nokia's phone?
I would like to buy the 6230. Could someone tell me if its fields are also 60 characters' limited?

Does any of you guys know any Nokia 6510 codes?And I do not mean unlock codes,as it is already unlocked...
What I am particularly looking for are codes to turn up the volume,as my volume side buttons broke and I can't adjust the volume anymore...And that's not good...

you've got a lot of nokia codes to enhance voice quality, read emei, check warrenty, and some shortcuts of menu, but i don't think there is a code for turn up volume...
what if you take of the frontcover and try to press buttons on side of the phone with a pencil or something alike, does it work that way? Once volume is set up right, you don't need to do it every day...

but the problem is that the part under the cover which actually adjusts the volume up is gone...it broke and this tiny part fell out...and now i can't do anything,even with a pencil...

i can only adjust the volume down...

i don't know...i mean the phone works ok,but its really a bit quiet the volume is about the 4 th or 5th strength of the 9 available...especially a problem when you are in a cafe or on the street or some other place noisy...it just gets annoying...other than that its almost an "outdoor-mobile"...it's that strong/robust... (i don't know how many times it fell on the floor,etc... )

If you are talking about a sim lock, all Nokia phones have there own unlock codes that are IMEI specific. You will need to do a search on google or something to find a place that can get you the code to unlock your phone. Most of the time you can find places that do it for free.

512mb will be no problem with most MMC cards... some brands doens't work, need to format the MMC card first...

Can anyone help me? I've just bought a nokia 3100, partly because I thought the speakerphone feature would save me having to use an earphone in the car. However, I find the volume is far too low to hear the loudspeaker whilst driving. I cannot find in the manual if there is any way to increase the loudspeaker volume, nor the call volume when in handset mode. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

i use the DKU-2 USB Cable to transfer mp3s to my 6230 and i also have a 256MB MMC

MMC-card readers are the fastest way to move data on it, but you'll have to remove your mmc card from phone.
Then comes USB cable. IR is very slow and don't think bluetooth is much faster, but easier to use (no direct link)

I think that Memory Card readers are the fastest, because there is a direct connection to the card.

Then:

USB 2.0 480 Mbps
USB 1.1 12 Mbps
Bluetooth 1Mbps
IrDA or IR 115Kbps

I think that's the way it is...

Prob with 6230 Music Player!

Hey all,

I've just come across a problem with my 6230's music player.

I have purchased a Kingmax 256Mb MMC. It works fine. I have put 214Mb of MP3s on the card via Bluetooth.

Now the problem I have come across is that when I go to play songs in Music Player, they are out of order. No its not in Random more or anything like that. In Galery, looking in the MMC folder, the songs are in correct order. So thats why I think this is strange. The Song names are all in name order with a track number also, so that there is no confussion in the order.

If someone has a resolution to this, where they have experienced it themselves or know of a solution then it would be greatly appreciated if they could let me know of it.

My software version is 3.14. I live in Sydney, Australia.

CurrentlyI own a 6600 for three and a half months...I love it...

However...I am getting bored with the 3rd party applications...now I am more concentrate in games...I have a few hundred of games in my 6600 now...the phone is more like a "game deck" for me...

But...I am facing a problem...it is really uncomfartable to play games with 6600 due to the design is not for gaming...since I "treat" my phone more like a game deck...I am considering whether wanna sell my 6600 and get the N-Gage which is more prefessional in gaming...

Advantages of getting N-gage...
1. Suitable for gaming(I am more concentrate in games)
2. I like the attrative design of N-gage
3. Better graphic quality(N-Gage has 3D graphic chip)
4. Stereo MP3 player
5. Radio

Disadvantages of getting N-gage
1. No more camera and video recording functions
2. Only 4096colour screen(OK for game, bad for video clips n pics)
3. Some games may not support(KillerVirus,game using camera)
4. Bigger size to fit into my pocket

How do u guys think??...should I get myself an N-Gage??

In ireland the n-gage is selling for 99euro on prepay with 50 euro credit included and the fifa game thrown in. So how much does the n-gage really cost then?

However, the 6600 costs 550euro (not available on pre-pay or available by the networks yet). Of course the 6600 is the technically superior phone. But if you just want it for games and music you might want to take the price into consideration too.

the point of skins/themes is that you can replace it if you don't like it... so if you don't like the special standard icons of 7610, take some others, the original S60 theme will normaly be present

Yeah, if you look at pictures of that menu, people might not buy it because it's bad looking. Not too many people know about themes or where to get them from. I know that some of these Symbian 7 themes are really beautiful (I've seen some on the 6600, which made me wish my SX1 had that possibility) but what I just don't get is why Nokia don't want to show of the capabilities of this phone. It has a high res 65k screen, why do they throw in a ugly theme that could've been displayed by a 256 color screen with half of the current pixels.

Sorry wasn't trying to start an argument, i just nver subscribed to the argument that jus cause no stereo accessary is supported on the nokia website, after all the 6600 supported the stereo headset accessary that didn't mean it had stereo capabilities did it?

ghost2501 is right, not including a stereo headset as accessory doesn't mean that it don't support stereo sound. The stereo headset is mostly used for FM Radio. I'm very sure that the 7610 will support stereo sound output, because it's useless (very useless) to say and mension that there's an MP3/ACC player in the phone which is RealPlayer, in previous S60 devices, RealPlayer couldn't play these formats. So what's the use of playing MP3/ACC with a mono output?

I'm reading and hearing very conflicts infos regarding the 7610, Michael (from MobileBurn) said that a Nokia USA official said that it won't support stereo output, another one said that a Nokia team said unfortunately the MP3/AAC music are used to add them in ur clip by using the Directer app NOT playing them in RealPlayer, and finally I asked a Nokia official here and said that IT DOES support stereo outport. Very Weird.

hey ppl bought the n-gagae just have a question can't i use mp3 ringtones in my message tone i can see the mp3s in the ringing tone but can't see mp3s in my message tone but wav files can be used but can i use mp3 message tnes help thx...... well heres a pic of my n-gage too!!! enjoy

mp3 quality is much more better then the wav but if i incease the bitrate the fie size too big so thats the prob neways i think i gota do sumthin thanks but i love the N-Gage man its a cool device. thx guys

.wav is a much better sound quality... mp3 are mostly made of wave files... mp3 is a codec that decreses the size of a music file...

how do i get all my mp3 files to play one after the other on my 6230.i can only get them to play one at a time? all help appreciated............cheers

normaly when you start 6230 music player you get a playlist of all your song on mmc card, and the music player play's then in order or randon.
If you press Options, you can refresh the track list (for example after adding new tracks to the list) and change the track list that is shown when you open the Music player menu, if several track lists are available in the phone...

yeh,it manages to work now as i had them in a folder which it didnt recognise.why is this ?i would like them in different folders per album

you can make folders on your mmc card, and replace your songs... easy to do with Pc-suite

bear with me my friend,when i put them in a folder in my mmc the music player cant find them? when i remove the folder and have them on my mmc as normal the music player finds them?

I would go for Nokia, but you have to know... I still finds Nokia the easiest system to use. Althow i don't think the 3200 is the best phone nokia has ever made, but with that pricetag you've got a lot of technologie in your pocked...
