Nokia became popular, after launching the models like 3210, 3310 for youth, and the 5110 and 6110 for business...
why? good screen, good battery life and great features like the game Snake, SMS, Calendar, ...
that all combined with a good strategie and marketing...
but here is a thread in this forum more about it... Mayby intresting to read...

Thanks kristof for adding the part on battery, could help my analysis on Nokia.
design wise, they introduced changeable covers (i believe come out on 3210), composer which came out on 3310 (with people having their favourite songs as their ringtones, which lead to the ringtone industry itself), some people found the white light in 8850/8310 very lovely....
its really unfortunate their creativity towards the wrong direction, i seriously have no idea what they are doing in that department....real odd designs, just killing themselves
just relying on their brand image i guess

Nokia's brand image isn't strong any more. Not now that SE have come out with such amazing phones. I think they are absolutely the most reliable phones on the market.

But their brand image is still stronger than those other choices =P

They were very inventive back then, And they still want to be that way, but that is the problem, they became to experimental (like the 7600/3650/(3510i)/3200/3300)
that is sometimes no mistake (because they have a lot of cash reserves they can risk a failure, unlike some other brands)
and some of there ideas of making types of phones (for everyone is a nokia phone)
like the communicator (who did this back then)
like the 8810 (a premium device)
like the 6250 (5210/5140) a mobile for active people
like the 8210/8310 fashion series
like the 6800 (full keypath)
but other company's are taking over these stratagies, and that is a part where nokia getting more competition. other company's are learning out of there own mistakes, and the succes of others.
But nokia misses some product in there gamma at this moment, like more clamshell phones, more phones in the mid range (like the 6100, 6610, etc)
Never the less Nokia got some great phones in there portfolio at this moment (like the 6230/5140/6820/9500)
Never jugde a company by there worst products...

I'd say one of the good points of Nokia (which is probably more valid six months or a year ago rather than now) is that they have attempted to 'catch' their market and move with it. For example - a young person with a 3310 might have chosen an 8310 and now be moving on to a 6600 or a 7200. Nokia's are regarded as a 'safe' choice within a peer group and Nokia work on this by bringing out news series' of phones which distinctively express the brand.
The 'safety' of the brand is personified by the layout and relative ease of use of the menus in the Nokia phones. When some people experience a Moto or SE they are often confused - in my experience the default method of navigation in a certain generation stems from the basic design of the Nokia interface.
I agree with the earlier comment about the introduction of clip on covers - in the more low budget market this is a cheap and disbensable method of personalisation, and this is invaluable.
These are just my opinions though, and I'm no phone expert! Good luck with your research x

Well in the past it was in my eyes that Nokia built good phones. The RF and UI were superb and they did the basic functions of what you wanted out of a phone consistently well. The quality of components I always found was good too. Add to that their Xpress covers really tailored to individuality and the youth market. They put out a decent spread of phones as well for all markets. They were really in a league of their own early on since most other companies were putting out crap.
Where Nokia fell down in my eyes is first they really haven't pushed the high end as much as other companies or innovated on technology a whole lot. On paper their phones have started to languish a bit and although the high end isn't a huge fraction of the market it is an important fraction.
Where they have innovated more recently is in the design of the phone's case and to be frank I think most of them are hideous. Putting phones in all sorts of ridiculous form factors to look different has in my eyes been one of their biggest mistakes along with their refusal to produce flip phones. The 7200 had the potential to be a great turnaround there but I think they made a mistake when they went for such a small screen (I don't care much about screen size but it's small when you look at the area around it) and a poor hinge design.

nokia is doing foolish things to loose its first position by repeating its model with same thing, 6600 is same as 3660, 6100 same as 7210, 7250 same as 3200, what to say more, i had nokia phone earlier at the era of 3310 but now i have gone to other brands who give more value for money than nokia

where do you get this?
the 6100 the same as the 7210?
the 6600 the same as the 3660?
the 7250 the same as the 3200?
they don't even use the same body... only the same parts like screen, camera or OS, like every mobile company does that...
the 7210 is the same as the 6610, because it has got the same body with different covers, but the 6100 is a total different body.
same for the 6600 vs 3660, they use the same screen, but not the same body.
please, if you want to say something, check your sources first!!!

Yes, there is something that distinguishes a Nokia from any other phone, and that is the Nokia badging. That's enough to make people love the phone, and more than enough to make them overlook the negative aspects, for if it's a Nokia, there's no coming to terms with any flaws...

I know a lot of people waiting for this phone;
Push to talk, GPS, EDGE and GPRS class 10, digital compass, Dust and splashes protective cover, Flashlight, Thermometer, Decibel meter, MIDP 2.0, XHTML...
but off course also got some less points like the screen, no MMC or SD cards... but still a good phone with a lot of features
