Smartphone

Just saw Nokia 6230 release here. So just wondering if this is a smartphone like 3660 and 6600? What's the different between 6230 and 6600? What is the RAM of 3660, 6600, and 6230?
__________________
The 6230 is no smartphone. The 6230 runs on simple
OS and not on a Symbian or Microsoft OS.

The 6230 has 8 MB internal memory. The 3660 has
3.4 MB and 6600 has 6 MB. All the three have MCC
card slots.

Huh? So what OS 6230 uses? Can I "install" application to the phone just like 6600?
__________________
the 6230 is a series 40 phone, that has got nothing to do with symbian (series 60)

yes you can install programs as long they are based upon Java
__________________
So in other word, 6600 application cannot be install into this phone?
What are the other smartphone available in the market? P800 and P900? Running on Symbian OS too?
Can I install those compatible 6600 application to SE P800/900?
__________________
Yes, you are right that is not possible.

Other smartphones are SE P800 and P900,
Siemens SX1, Nokia 3650/3660, Ngage and
Nokia 9210i.

Upcoming phones are: Sendo X, Motorola
A1000, (A920, A925), Nokia 7610, 7700,
9500, Panasonic X700, successor P900.

The phones which have series 60 can
install programs from the Nokia 6600.
The following phones have series 60:

Siemens SX1
Nokia 3650/3660
Nokia 7610
Sendo X
Panasonic X700

For the other Symbian OS based phones
the programs have other versions which
can be run on the other symbian OS's.
So if you want a program from the 6600
on a P900 then you have to get another
version of the same program at the
developer of the program. In most cases
the program is available on all sorts of
Symbian OS. Thus for P900, 6600 or other
Symbian sort.

Thanks MR for the reply, now I am able to understand more about smartphone. Just one more question, I hear that 6600 can play n-gage game but not 3660 / 3650 as its RAM is not as fast as 6600. So what is the RAM (speed) of 6600, ngage, P800, 3650, and 3660?
__________________
Amount of RAM is significantly differenet, not speed. (apart from audio N-Gage is very much similar to 3650/3660) Some N-Gage games simply won't fit 3650/3660 memory. And since memory allocation is dynamic this may look like a sluggish performance from the beginning.

Series60 defines user interface constraints such as screen size, available buttons, joystick type (2,4,5 way). Same applies to application designed for Series60.

Synbian OS has 2 major versions at the moment 6.x and 7.x Compatibility is limited between those.

wrong.

do not confuse series 60 with symbian
those phones are all symbian, but series 60 only mean a series of nokia phones

series 60 phones are:
6600
3600s
7610
i think ngage
7650

and all those with the same screen size.

communicators, 7700 are also symbian phones but they are series 70, 80 and 90 or something like that

other phone brands i don't think even have it classified as series XX
__________________
Wrong

Look at the www.symbian.com site and look
at the Symbian versions. The series are Nokia
like? Why do Siemens and Sendo use the
same name for their User Interface?

Series 60, 70, 80 and 90 are related with
the Symbian OS thus you can mention them
in own sentence.

MR
__________________
i stand corrected

the series is not exclusive to nokia.

however, series 60 only applies to phones with a certain screen and stats.

series 60 = 4 non-nokia phones, as opposed to 9 nokia phones. so far series 80 and 90 are nokia only

sorry for confusing
__________________
the series 60 is a UI, or user interface, made by nokia. But every mobile phone company can buy a licence on the series 60 so Siemens, SE, Samsung etc can use it.

Symbian are the layers underneeth, the real software and control system.
Series 60 is just the things you see, where the menu is etc...

Like windows is the UI of DOS...

off course, you need certain specifications of a phone to run symbian and Series 60. For series 60 is the size of the screen very important, and the keypath (amount of buttons), for symbian is the amount of Ram and proccesor very important

Series 60 is the only User interface nokia has licence on.
Series 80/90 are made for Nokia for the 7700 and the communicator. and some more in future. Series 80 UI will be for Nokia and no other company
Series 90 (the 7700) UI might become licenced for others
__________________
So am I correct to say that 6230 is similiar to 7600?
__________________
well yeah i guess so though their interfaces are slightly different since 7600 has a larger screen
__________________
Yep you can say that relating the series 60.

Not concerning the further specs!

no... 7600 is 128x160

but technically both still have the same series 40 ui... though some people would say 7600 has series 45 ui

series 60 is just a series of phone by Nokia which run symbian OS...for other brand that use symbian are called series 60 too because the symbian license is by Nokia...though they consider under series 60...

screen size doesn't decide the series of the phone...it is based on the OS...I believe in the future...all series40 by Nokia will use a screen size of 128x160...beginning with the 7600....

for nokia so far, yes it has been deciding the series... or perhaps the series decide the screen. But perhaps you're right, in the future series 40 is shifting to 128x160
__________________
Series 60 UI category has actually nothing to do with Symbian and OS as a such, it only defines mandatory UI elements:

"It mandates a color screen with a pre-determined size of 176 x 208 pixels, and includes support for a variety of different functions, which include: two softkeys, 4-way scrolling, an application launching and swapping key, as well as ‘send’ and ‘end’ keys. To improve and facilitate text input, it includes a ‘clear’ key and an ‘alpha toggle’ key. Furthermore, it uses a standard 12-key number keypad with alpha printings."

...though it has been initially designed for Symbian OS based smartphones (e.g. application key)

Concerning screen size - Series XX defines mandatory minimum size of usable screen area, so there is nothing wrong with 7600.

Series60 phones by other manufacturers than Nokia use Nokia Series60 platform software, hardware-independant, so they are not just called Series60, they actually ARE Series60 phones

The SE-K700 also has a display of 176X220 resolutions, and it has much options, and it's not symbian or series 60.
__________________
but the SE K700 has got nothing to do with eighter symbian or Series 60, stay on topic...

There is a lot of confusing thing about the series 60 and symbian...

Just remember that series 60 is a user interface (made by Nokia and only Nokia) and symbian is an operating system. (developed by SE, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Psion, etc...)

both Symbian and Series 60 are available to be used on other phones (other company's) under licence system.

Symbian...just an operating system....just like Windows or Linux for pc...nothing to do with screen size or whatever...many other brands which running symbian have a screen of 176x220....but not 176x208...but they are series 60...licensed by Nokia...

6230 experts!!!

well here are a few questions for u!
1. can i bluetooth directly to the MMC or it is always target to the phone and then i move it to the MMC?
2. where can i find apps and games where i can download it to the phone?
3. usint the NOKIA PC SUITE in the INSTALL APPLICATION why does it says that i have only 307kb available space on the phone i havent isntalled anything yet? anyone with the same problem? can i install this programs directly to the MMC?
__________________
1. I have not been able to bluetooth directly to my MMC card. I am not sure if the software suite will allow me to, but when transferring data so far, it had to go over the phone memory first. If you take out the mmc card however, and put it in an external cardreader, you can fill the baby up directly then again that is kinda obvious if you ask me!

2. Dunno

3. I don't know..try resetting it to the manufacturer settings. My phone had 8mb of empty space, and 500kb were used when I turned it on the first time...

Nokia Lose 17% of its stock market in one day

Nokia First-Quarter Sales Miss Forecast; Shares Drop (Update2) Listen
April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Nokia Oyj, the world's biggest mobile- phone maker, said first-quarter sales fell 2 percent, missing its forecast, as handset sales fell in Europe and Asia, leading to a profit drop. The stock lost as much as 17 percent.

Sales fell to 6.6 billion euros ($8 billion) from a year earlier, Espoo, Finland-based Nokia said in a statement to the Helsinki exchange. It previously expected sales to rise 3 percent to 7 percent. Nokia said first-quarter profit was 17 euro cents a share, at the low end of a target range of 17 cents to 19 cents. Nokia earned 20 cents a share a year earlier.

``This is a big disappointment,'' said Frank Heise, who helps manage $133 billion at Union Investment in Frankfurt, including Nokia shares. ``The company runs the risk of a credibility problem because until very recently Nokia's comments regarding phones were quite upbeat.''

Nokia, which makes almost two out of every five handsets sold, lost market share after failing to introduce new products quickly enough. Revenue slid in 2003 and 2002 as Western markets became saturated, prices slipped, the dollar fell against the euro and competition from the likes of Motorola Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. increased.

Nokia's volumes rose 19 percent in the quarter while the market as a whole surged 25 percent, Nokia said, blaming ``certain gaps'' in its product range.

Nokia shares fell as much as 2.95 euros to 14.40 euros and traded at 14.57 euros at 3:53 p.m. in Helsinki. Before today, the stock was up 26 percent this year.

Phones Demand

Sales at Nokia's main unit which makes less costly phones and the Multimedia division that makes handsets with music players and cameras lagged expectations, Nokia said.

``Missing the sales forecast is a complete surprise,'' said Duco Frie, who helps oversee the equivalent of about $175 million at Nyenburgh Asset Management in Amsterdam, including Nokia shares. ``It's somewhat worrying that they seem to be struggling to gain market share in Asia, where the biggest growth in the mobile-phone industry is coming from.''

At the Enterprise Solutions unit, which makes phones for corporate use, sales beat expectations, the company said.

Sales at the network unit jumped a greater-than-expected 16 percent to 1.4 billion euros from the year-earlier quarter, according to the release.

The operating margin, or operating profit as a percentage of sales, beat Nokia's expectations at the Multimedia, Enterprise Solutions and Networks divisions, the company said without elaborating.

At the Mobile Phones unit, lower-than-expected volumes and ``product mix'' hurt sales and operating profit.

``While our product portfolio in the first quarter was not at its strongest, we believe that during the year we will see improvement as we bring new products to market,'' Chief Executive Officer Jorma Ollila said in the statement.

spokeman of Nokia; Due to certain gaps in its product portfolio, mainly in the mid range, the company was not able to fully capitalize on positive market developments...

And another one;
So rather than the industry being in bad shape, it looks like Nokia, the cell phone market leader, might have not been able to meet demand for some higher priced phones (think color screens and camera phones). As a result, it may have lost some share to competitors such as Samsung, Siemens and even Motorola, said Greg Gorbatenko, an analyst with Marquis Investment Research

This was just a statement what to expect on the April the 16th...

But I have a feeling they've shown most of their stuff, and nokia is now going to capitalize on this. No more experimental rubbish, most of their upcoming stuff is just very very good (and there's a lot of it).

Strange: Nokia HDS-3 headset @ 40deg C "color-wash" and tumble dry

Well, just as I thought: I was gonna forget to take the headset out of my working pants before washing them after work some day!
And that day was today, a bit sooner than expected... Just remembered em now, so i ran to get it out of the dryer. Though, strangely enough, the headset and mic works as perfectly after a 40C "color-wash", and 90 minutes in the tumble dryer. Hehe... Robust little buggers! Just tested em on my 6230...

Just so you dont throw em away if they get wet!

Nokia6600 - Get more space for your MMC

Your files in MMC is stored in multiple (disk) blocks.
So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K.

If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore a lot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K.

You will need a card reader to do this:-

1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk.
(Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")
2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.
Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format.

Make sure you select FAT16. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.

(Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size)

3. Copy back all files to MMC.

Now you will find that you will have more space.
I have a 256MB MMC and it is nearly full with (small) program files. After doing this, I gain an "extra" 35MB.

===Edited===
Note that you will gain extra free space and not total space.
256MB MMC will give total of 256MB no matter what block size you use.

File Size + Wastage = Total MMC Space (constant)

You reduce wastage then you increase the file space.

If you use your MMC just store MP3 (large files), then it may not make much of a difference.

Just a note that if you do the step in my previous post, implicitly you have done a defragmentation also.

Yeah, right...
Just make sure your phone will recognise that reformatted card in the first place...
Then you'd need a cardreader that supports format options, some of them do not even format MMC, just recreate empty FAT

You should plug your card reader to PC and let PC recognise it as a "removable drive". Then you can use Windows to format it. If your card reader cannot be recognised as a removable/usb drive then you can forget about doing this.

For myself, I have 256MB MMC and I reformated using 4K block (this is smallest possible). Copied back files and I got extra 33Mb of free space. No kidding.

And there is no problem with the phone recognising the MMC. I'm using a 6600.

Recovering security code on 8910i

RE:- Recovering security code on 8910i

Hello All,

Ive forgotten my security code and have tryed all the alternativs i could of set it to. It was originally 12345....but i think someone has changed it.

Does anyone know how to reset it?

Mani

Go to a sevice point and ask to reset security code, this will cost you money!!!

Or go to a service point and ask for a software update, just tell them you've got some problems... this is free (under warrenty) and the security code will be reset standard...

There is no hacking tool to read the code out on a Series 40 device...

Its still under warranty. Thanks.

don't tell them you forgot the security code!!! otherwise you will pay...

You can get the security code reset on the phone. You just need software and data cable.

BUGS and questions - 6230

Here are some bugs/defects I found in the phone during the weekend. And some questions..

V 03.14
12-03-04
RH-12

1. It have hanged twice for me.. once taking a picture and when saving the picture the progress bar never finished.. (reset and the picture was in the gallery) .
And once browsing the gallery and played the song on the memorycard.. (Strange Transmissins.amc).. it hanged..

2. As many have noticed the callergroup did't work.. did't work for me either and the factory reset solved it.

3. Playing music in the MusicPlayer via the Headset.. chosing to play the sound vi the phone still playes the sound via the headsets.

4. How the heck to edit/add playlists.. anyone managed to create a own playlist ?

5. Voicerecording.. can't delete the just recored files.. had to reset and after that it was possible to delete them.

6. Moving and MP3 file makes the playlist strange..
after move.. update all removes the file from the list..
next new update all and there it popsup again..

7. PS-Suite is it possible to install games via the pc-suit (6.0).. ?
Tried the application installer but then the game turned up in the application folder ( ie.. can't play witout sound ).
So is it possible to install in the games folder ?

8. Is it possible to show a bigger picture as caller ID ?

Otherwise it have wroked ok and is nice.. Charged (first charge) the phone on Friday Lunch.. and still on the same charge Monday morning.. And I have used the phone quite much during the weekend.

1. a bug
2. OK, was a bug
3. looks like a bug
4. i think it's impossible, makes it's own playlists
5. strange, but i think this also look like a bug
6. this is logic, you moved the musicfile, so it's not on the original place where the musicplayer looks and it thinks it's removed, but if you refresh the list it's search aqain in all folders...
7. yes it's possible to install java games via pc suite. indeed had the problem also that's it's located in the program list, but now i use Mobimb, much easier... (www.logomanager.co.uk or search Kazaa)
8. no, not possible...

Fastest way to transfer data to a 6230?

I was wondering which would be the fastest way to transfer files to the 6230 (through Irda, Bleutooth or data cable), I just don't want to take out the MMC each time... Perhaps someone has any experience with this? Thanks
__________________
of course bluetooth is easiest and fastest...
__________________
Thanks Tu!@ng, but are you sure? I knew I could rule out Irda, but wouldn't a data cable be faster than Bleutooth (seems logic)? I would need to upgrade my PC with a Bleutooth connection anyway, so I could buy a data cable instead if it's faster...
__________________
i thought it has a usb port for transfering data from phone to pc ?
__________________
No, it does not have an USB connector on the phone. But it does support the Pop-port interface, so with the right cable (Nokia dku-2 data cable) you can connect it directly to an USB port.
__________________
the fastest way is remove the mmc card and put it in a MMCreader/writer that's the fastest way to move big files, the 2nd best is indeed Bluetooth...
__________________
ya i agree with kristof.vanriet...
__________________
Ok thanks... I tested it today and got an average 'speed' of 25 KBytes/sec using infrared. With bleutooth this could (theoretically) increase to 125 KBytes/sec (1 Mbit). I think I'm going to go for the bleutooth...

Cool... looks good. Great job for their first flip phone.

My only dislike of nokia phones at the moment is the small screens. As phones are becoming increasingly more influenced by multimedia such as videos and photos, I think it's a must that they introduce models with bigger screens.

It's really the main reason why I'm not buying the 6230, and I'm waiting for the SE K700.

But I don't want to start a whole SE vs. Nokia debate so I'll shut up now.

The Dutch way of saying 'can't cope with ...' is 'kan/kunnen er niet tegen'; transating each individual word to English doesn't make you write English!! Remember that and stop bugging the Nokia part of the site with your useless comments.

Just my opinion, About time someone wrote this!

i'm already tested the 6230 allong ago

Everbody has his own review and his own opinion about the 6230.But mine coclusion is only poor Mpeg4/3 player quality, platform and interface and the screen.

Loud is not so inportent,if it clear compare other Nokia's you are richt about that.

Menu between 6230 and K700i.

So what is nicer

PS Attention. rockon83

He cannot agains little kritic about flaws from the 6230.
If he read negative points about the 6230,than he wil explode like a rocket.

Every phone has flaws if it SE,Nokia,Siemens whatever it is.

what is so important for the menu or menu icon??...performance is much more important...from the pics I dun see K700 menu is great...it looks like a recycle bin with all the icons throwing into it...yiakkkss...

of course 6230 menu is not the best as well...but it provides clean and clear info to the user...good job...it is better if icons are able to be changed like what 6600 does...

we are waiting for the photo taken by 6230...

It's interesting to see that the SE zealots who claim testings bash the mp3 playing, while other people praise it. Could it be that the SE zealots try to put down the one of the most nicest feature where 6230 wins over K700: functioning as a mp3 player...

Im charging it now ... and setting it up, so easy to use.. the 32Mb card comes with a pre-installed music track, and it sounds really good, even just on the speaker in the phone.. and you can set the mp3 as a ring tone if you want.

Camera quality looks good...

more when I play more :-)

Nokia only released one new handset at CTIA, however the one model they did release certainly does posses some impressive specs. We got a chance to see some video streaming on the 6230. It was only a few frames per second but it should be noted that the network congestion was HUGE at the show. Nokia actually setup their own network.

Nokia 6230

GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 or 900/1800/1900
3.4 oz
Series 40
VGA Camera
Video Player and Streaming Media capable.
