any N-Gage user pls answer!!!

I'm about to buy an N-Gage. What i wanted to know is can I really use any other headphones (like the ones of sony) or am I doomed to use only the ones that comes within the package? I know that there is a converter cable to use other headphoes but will it be stereo or mono?
