India has seen an explosion in mobile phone services. Subscribers using CDMA-based services are growing at a rate of 1 million a month. Until recently, mobile service providers were required to provide only GSM-based connections. While Nokia has significant market share in India in the GSM market, South Korean companies such as LG and Samsung appear have together grabbed market leadership in the CDMA sector. The new center will leverage Nokia's existing global CDMA expertise while building a team of local talent around the technology.
